1985 may be the most over-rated year in Grateful Dead history. That being said, there is some fantastic music played by the Boys that year. Everything sounded big and thick in 85'. Garcia was fat and his voice was borderline shot, but he did some serious rocking. Weir was in fine form and perhaps at the peak of his propensity to use heavy effects. The sbds available on the archive also showcase how full and loud Lesh was in the mix and the creativity shown by the drummers. 1985 is well represented on the archive. 1985 is heavy on fast playing, fast tempos of the "slower" number (like Eyes) and it's share of sloppy playing...

recommended shows

06-30-1985--amazing quality, decent first set, huge second set with all-time Shakedown Street, hot Samson, classic He's Gone and woozy Cryptical.
06-25-1985--great sbd recording. great first set, under-rated 2nd set showcases a fine China>Rider and Playin'
03-25-1985--mixed bag on quality, but 1st set deserves a listen, 2nd set is interesting.
03-27-1985--Half Step break out and Tom Thumb's debut. Great Shakedown, nice UJB
04-06-1985--hot Walkin the Dog in the first set and a prime Cumberland, 1st set is a great listen. Good quality.
09-07-1985--Red Rocks
06-16-1985--Greek Theatre huge Other One
08-30-1985--1st set epitomizes 85'
11-01-1985--one of the best 85' shows
11-07-1985--Let it Grow

of note is 08-24-1985, the notorious Boreal Ridge show, which some consider to be the worst show ever...China Cat is actually pretty good, the rest of it is bum-rushed but not as bad as some of the 94/ 95 stinkers (Highgate 95' comes to mind)

I hate to throw in about a year that everyone has an opinion on but 6/27 @ SPAC is pretty nice with a great 2nd set. And 12/30 with the Quinn 2nd set opener and a nice samson

I have to throw in 8/2/85 at OKC Zoo as well, some great 1st set stuff (stagger Lee >. Aiko and Phil rockin througholut) and a ver nice 2nd set.
Also as mentioned set 1 from 8/30, but i also loved the 2nd set, a little short (it was over 100 degrees and close to 100% humidity) but very sweet

I love 1985,inspite of its flaws, there was a lot of really great music played (like how badly the lyrics were botched in the Terrapin from Hershey Park but how its still one of my favorite and powerful versions). Phil was loud and booming, Drums were kicking and got really good and weird with the Beam (Hershey Park 6-28!!!), and they have some interesting and different song combos (Crazy Fingers>Supplication>High Time at SPAC and Bird Song>Comes A Time>Deal at Hershey Park) Spring and Summer tours were best, I think.

This one was not mentioned yet. 3-28-85 Nassau is killer, IMO, one of the best first sets of the year. First half of set II also smokes.

I have a show or two I would like to add...

10-29-1985 is hot, check it out. The Crazy Fingers>Jam is great.

Out of the Greek Theatre shows I prefer the 6-15-85 show the best, but think all three shows should be listed here because they're all good.

7-13-85 is interesting, with Sat Night to open and FOTM being the second song in the 1st set, Jerry plays some nice licks during Fire. All around good show.

nice bump on an 8 year thread ;D

06-15 is a good show

etree is no longer a grateful dead forum, ceased to be in 2005, hence the 85 post in etree, check out the actual grateful dead forum on here, 1985 has quite a few threads if that is a year you're looking into...

Another reason '85 comes in such high regard are the Oade recordings. I wish the Oade Bros were recording shows in '82 and '83.

IMHO, spring tour '85 was better then summer tour with a couple exceptions from late June and definitley better then the fall tour.

My favs from '85
3/29 1st set
3/31 (my favorite) MNS, Candyman, Playin Reprise->Playin->Day Tripper to end the show
4/4 - 1st set
6/14 - Favorite Dew
6/27 favorite Bertha
11/5 favorte Shakedown and Tom Thumbs
